From the standpoint of Eric Berne and his framework of Transactional Analysis, being “star-struck” is not just a fleeting emotion—it can be analyzed as a structured pattern of ego states, transactions, and underlying life scripts.

1. Ego States: Child dominates, Adult recedesIn Berne’s model, personality operates through three ego states: Parent, Adult, and Child.“Star-struck” reactions are typically driven by the Adapted Child or Free Child:

• The Free Child expresses awe, fascination, idealization (“This person is extraordinary!”)

• The Adapted Child may feel small, inferior, or submissive in the presence of perceived authority or status

Meanwhile, the Adult—the rational, reality-testing component—is partially “offline.” The person is no longer evaluating the celebrity as an equal human being but as a symbolic figure.

2. Transactional Structure: Complementary but asymmetricEven if no real interaction occurs, the internalized transaction looks like:

• Self (Child) → Other (Idealized Parent / Authority figure)

The “star” is psychologically elevated into a Parent ego state projection:

• Powerful

• Admired

• Possibly judgmental or granting approval

This creates a one-up / one-down dynamic, where the admirer places themselves in a dependent or diminished role.

3. Psychological Games and StrokesBerne emphasized “strokes” (units of recognition). Being star-struck is often about anticipated strokes:

• “If they notice me, I gain value.”

• “Their attention validates my existence.”

This can feed into subtle psychological games such as:

• “If Only” (If only I were like them…)

• “Look How Hard I Try” (seeking worth through comparison)

The celebrity becomes a stroke economy amplifier—a concentrated source of imagined validation.

4. Script ReinforcementAt a deeper level, “star-struck” reactions can reflect life scripts formed early:

• “Others are more important than me”

• “Greatness belongs to others”

• “I must admire rather than become”

In this sense, the reaction is not about the star per se, but about internalized hierarchy narratives.

5. Decontamination:

Restoring the Adult

From a therapeutic TA perspective, the goal is not to eliminate admiration but to rebalance it:

• Re-engage the Adult: “This is a skilled human, not a superior being.”

• Differentiate projection from reality

• Reclaim equal-status positioning (“I’m OK – You’re OK”)

Conclusion In Berne’s terms, being “star-struck” is a temporary regression into a Child ego state combined with projection of Parent authority onto another person. It reveals how easily humans organize social perception into hierarchical scripts. When the Adult state is reactivated, admiration can remain—but without loss of self-position or autonomy.
